Direct-to-Film (DTF) Printing

If you want full-color, detailed prints on almost any garment without minimums or setup fees, DTF printing is likely your best option. Direct-to-Film has become one of the most popular and versatile decoration methods available — and for good reason. It handles complex artwork, vibrant color, and small or large quantities with equal ease.

Whether you're a small business ordering 10 branded shirts, a sports team ordering jerseys with a detailed graphic, or a company launching a new merch line, DTF delivers professional results without the restrictions of traditional printing methods.

What Is DTF Printing?

Direct-to-Film printing works by printing your design onto a specialized film, applying a powdered adhesive while the ink is still wet, curing the transfer, and then heat-pressing it directly onto the garment. The adhesive bonds the ink layer permanently into the fabric fibers, creating a vibrant, durable print that holds up through regular washing and wear.

Unlike screen printing, DTF doesn't require separate screens for each color. Unlike embroidery, it reproduces photographic detail and gradients. It's one of the most flexible decoration methods available for custom apparel.

Why DTF Might Be the Right Choice for Your Project

DTF printing is the best fit when one or more of the following apply to your project:

  • Your design has multiple colors, gradients, shadows, or photographic elements
  • You need a small quantity — even just a few pieces — without paying setup fees
  • You want to print on t-shirts, hoodies, tote bags, backpacks, or other soft goods
  • Your design is detailed and would be expensive to reproduce with screen printing
  • You need flexibility to run different designs or variations in the same order
  • You want full-color results without simplifying your artwork

If your design is bold and simple with just a couple of solid colors and you're ordering 50+ pieces, screen printing might be more cost-effective. But for anything detailed, colorful, or small-quantity, DTF is hard to beat.

How the Process Works

  1. Artwork is prepared as a vector file or high-resolution PNG with a transparent background
  2. The design is printed onto a special transfer film using DTF inks
  3. A powdered adhesive is applied to the wet ink and the transfer is cured
  4. The finished transfer is heat-pressed onto the garment with controlled heat and pressure
  5. The adhesive melts and permanently bonds the ink into the fabric fibers

The result is a smooth, vibrant print with sharp edges and accurate color reproduction — including gradients, fine lines, and complex detail.

What DTF Prints Look Like and How They Hold Up

DTF prints are smooth to the touch with a slight sheen. Colors are vibrant and accurate, and the print sits slightly on top of the fabric rather than soaking in. With proper care (washed inside out, cold water, no bleach), DTF prints hold up well through regular wear and washing.

Our maximum standard transfer size is 11 inches wide by 24 inches tall, which covers full front and full back applications on most garment types.

Artwork Requirements

  • Best format: Vector file (.ai, .eps, .pdf) or high-resolution PNG with transparent background
  • Minimum resolution for raster files: 300 DPI at print size
  • No color limitations — full color, gradients, shadows, and photographic elements are all supported
  • Avoid very thin lines (under 1pt) or extremely small text, as these can be difficult to reproduce cleanly
  • Low-resolution images pulled from the internet will not print cleanly — always use the highest quality file available

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a minimum order for DTF printing?

No. DTF has no minimum order quantity. You can order a single shirt or hundreds — the process is the same either way.

Can DTF print on dark-colored garments?

Yes. Because DTF transfers include a white base layer, designs print accurately on both light and dark fabrics.

How long do DTF prints last?

With proper care, DTF prints are durable and long-lasting. Wash inside out in cold water, tumble dry low or hang dry, and avoid bleach or harsh detergents.

What file format should I send?

Vector files (.ai, .eps, .pdf) or high-resolution PNG files with transparent backgrounds are ideal. If you're unsure, send us what you have and we'll let you know what works.

Can I get a proof before production?

Yes. Our team will provide a digital proof for approval before your order goes into production.

Can DTF print on fabrics other than cotton?

Yes. DTF works on cotton, polyester, blends, nylon, and most other common fabric types. Some specialty materials may behave differently — our team will advise if there are any concerns with your garment choice.

How is DTF different from screen printing?

Screen printing uses physical screens and is most cost-effective for large quantities with simple, solid-color designs. DTF has no setup fees, no minimums, and handles full-color and detailed artwork without restriction — making it more flexible for smaller runs and complex designs.
