Puff Print

Want your apparel to stand out from every other screen-printed shirt in the room? Puff printing adds a raised, three-dimensional texture to your design that people can both see and feel. It takes a standard screen print and elevates it into something premium — the kind of decoration you notice immediately and remember long after.

Puff printing is built on the same foundation as screen printing, so it carries all the same durability and color richness — with an added tactile dimension that gives your brand, logo, or design a distinctive, high-end quality.

What Is Puff Printing?

Puff printing is a specialty screen printing technique where a puff additive is mixed into the ink before it's applied to the garment. When the garment passes through the curing dryer, the heat activates the additive, causing the ink to expand and rise — creating a soft, embossed effect across the printed area.

The result is a print that has physical dimension. Bold text, logos, and graphic shapes lift off the surface of the garment, creating natural shadow and depth that flat printing simply can't achieve.

Why Puff Print Might Be the Right Choice for Your Project

Puff printing is the best fit when one or more of the following apply:

  • You want your apparel to look and feel premium, not just printed
  • Your design features bold text, a strong logo, or clean graphic shapes
  • You're launching a lifestyle brand, streetwear line, or premium merchandise
  • You want decoration that stands out visually from standard screen-printed apparel
  • You're creating team gear, uniforms, or event shirts that need to make an impact
  • Your design has large, solid elements that would benefit from dimensional texture

Puff printing is not ideal for designs with very fine detail, small text, or intricate shapes — the ink expansion can cause thin elements to fill in or lose definition. If your design is highly detailed, screen printing or DTF may be a better fit.

How the Process Works

Puff printing follows the exact same process as standard screen printing, with one key difference in the ink:

  1. Artwork is separated by color and screens are prepared (one per color)
  2. A puff additive is mixed into the screen printing ink
  3. The garment is printed just like a standard screen print — ink is pushed through each screen using a squeegee
  4. The garment passes through a curing dryer
  5. Heat activates the puff additive, causing the printed areas to expand and rise
  6. The finished print has a raised, three-dimensional surface with the same sharp color as a standard screen print

What Puff Prints Look Like and How They Feel

The raised effect ranges from subtle to bold depending on the garment fabric and ink application. On softer, lighter fabrics, the texture is more pronounced. On heavier fabrics like thick fleece, the effect may be slightly more subtle but still visually striking.

The raised surface creates natural light and shadow, giving the design depth that changes slightly as the viewing angle shifts. Puff prints are soft to the touch despite the raised texture.

Maximum print area: 10 inches wide by 15 inches tall (standard garments), 2 inches by 4 inches (hats).

Artwork Requirements

  • Best format: Vector file (.ai, .eps, .pdf)
  • Designs should use bold, clean shapes and solid colors — fine lines, small text, and intricate detail may not translate cleanly
  • Because puff ink expands during curing, very thin elements can fill in or merge — our team will flag any areas of concern before production
  • Color count follows the same rules as screen printing (one screen per color)
  • Orders under 72 pieces: up to 4 colors | Orders 72+: up to 6 colors

Frequently Asked Questions

What does puff print actually look like?

The design physically raises off the surface of the garment — typically 1–3mm depending on the ink, fabric, and application. Think of an embossed effect, similar to how embroidery adds dimension to a garment.

Is puff print durable?

Yes. The puff additive is part of the screen printing ink, which cures permanently into the fabric. With proper care (washed inside out, cold water, tumble dry low), puff prints are durable and long-lasting.

Can I combine puff and standard screen printing in the same design?

Yes. Some designs use puff ink on specific elements (like a logo or text) while other parts of the design are printed with standard ink. Ask our team and we can quote a combined approach.

Can puff print go on hats?

Yes. Hat puff printing is available with a maximum print area of 2 inches by 4 inches. The raised effect on structured hat panels is a very popular look for branded headwear.

Why is puff print more expensive than screen printing?

Puff printing requires specialty ink with the puff additive, additional attention during curing to ensure consistent expansion, and more production care overall. The 25% upcharge reflects those added materials and labor.

Is puff print the same as embroidery?

No — but the visual result can be similar. Embroidery uses thread stitched into the fabric, while puff print uses raised ink. Puff print is more cost-effective for large prints, while embroidery is preferred for premium, long-lasting decoration on hats, polos, and jackets.

Why Order From Personal Graphics

Puff printing requires careful control over ink mixing, press settings, and curing temperatures. Too little heat and the ink won't fully expand. Too much and the texture can flatten or discolor. Our team handles all of this in-house, monitoring every run to ensure the puff effect is uniform and consistent across every garment.

Every order is inspected before it leaves our shop. If something isn't right, we catch it before it reaches you.
