Some decoration methods look great on day one and start to fade or peel over time. Laser engraving isn't one of them. When a laser etches a design into metal, wood, leather, or glass, it creates a mark that's as permanent as the material itself. There's no ink to fade, no coating to chip, and nothing to peel — just a clean, precise design that becomes part of the item forever.
At Personal Graphics, laser engraving is one of our most requested services for personalized gifts, branded drinkware, corporate awards, and custom leather patches. No minimums. Quoted per project. Done right.
What Is Laser Engraving?
Laser engraving uses a focused, computer-controlled laser beam to vaporize the surface layer of a material, permanently etching the design into it. The laser follows the artwork file precisely, reproducing logos, text, and graphics with exceptional accuracy and fine detail.
Unlike printing or vinyl application, laser engraving doesn't apply anything to the surface — it removes material. The result is a recessed, permanent mark that feels different than the surrounding surface and creates natural contrast through light and shadow.
Why Laser Engraving Might Be the Right Choice for Your Project
Laser engraving is the best fit when one or more of the following apply:
- You want a decoration that is truly permanent and will never fade, peel, or wash away
- You're ordering drinkware, glassware, or tumblers with a custom logo or name
- You want custom leather patches for hats, jackets, bags, or merchandise
- You're creating personalized gifts — engraved glasses, wooden keepsakes, metal accessories
- You're producing branded corporate gifts or awards that need to convey quality
- You want a premium, handcrafted look that printed decoration can't achieve
If you need full-color decoration on fabric or apparel, printing methods like DTF or embroidery are the right tools. Laser engraving is the choice when the item is hard goods — drinkware, wood, leather, metal, or glass — and permanence is the priority.
Materials We Engrave
COATED DRINKWARE
Tumblers, mugs, water bottles, and other coated drinkware are among our most popular engraving items. The laser removes the surface coating to reveal the base material beneath — creating a clean, permanent mark that holds up through daily use, dishwashing, and years of handling. Custom engraved drinkware is one of the most valued branded gifts a business can give.
GLASSWARE
Engraving on glass produces a frosted, etched appearance with a premium feel. Popular for personalized gifts, wedding favors, corporate awards, and branded barware. The frosted mark is clean, detailed, and permanent.
LEATHER
Laser engraving on leather creates a precise, dark impression with beautiful natural contrast against the leather surface. We use leather engraving primarily for custom patches (available in round, oval, rectangle, and square shapes), but we also engrave leather accessories and branded goods.
WOOD
The laser creates a natural burn contrast on wood, producing a warm, distinctive look popular for plaques, signs, awards, cutting boards, and decorative gifts. Every piece of wood is slightly different, which gives wood engravings a handcrafted quality that's impossible to replicate digitally.
METAL
Clean, permanent engraving on metal surfaces for branded hardware, awards, tags, and accessories. Metal engraving is precise and durable with a professional finish.
CUSTOM ITEMS

How the Process Works
- Artwork is prepared as a vector file
- The file is loaded into the laser engraving software and mapped to the item
- The item is positioned in the laser engraver
- The laser moves precisely across the surface, vaporizing material wherever the design calls for it
- The finished item is cleaned, inspected, and prepared for delivery
The entire process is computer-controlled, producing consistent, precise results across every piece in an order.
What Laser Engraving Looks Like
Laser engraving produces a single-tone result — the contrast between the engraved (removed) area and the unengraved surface. On coated drinkware, the coating is removed to reveal a bright metallic or matte base. On wood, the burn creates a dark, warm contrast. On leather, the engraving appears as a clean dark impression. On glass, the result is a frosted, etched appearance.
There is no color in standard laser engraving. Designs that rely on color need to be adapted to work as a clean, high-contrast single-tone design.
Maximum engraving area: 16 inches wide by 27 inches tall.
Artwork Requirements
- Required format: Vector file (.ai, .eps, .pdf, .svg) — precision engraving requires clean vector paths
- Designs should use bold shapes, solid lines, and clean outlines for the best contrast
- Very fine detail can be reproduced accurately, but extremely small text should be reviewed for legibility at the intended size
- No gradients or color — designs are reproduced as a single-tone engraving
- Photos and raster images need to be converted for engraving — our team can advise

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does laser engraving last?
Permanently. Laser engraving removes material — it doesn't apply anything on top. The mark will not fade, peel, or wash away. It will last as long as the item itself.
Can you engrave something I bring in?
Yes. We welcome custom items. Our team will evaluate the material and let you know whether it's compatible with laser engraving before any work begins. Not all materials engrave equally, and some coatings or composites may not respond as expected.
Can you add a logo to our company drinkware or gifts?
Absolutely. Branded drinkware and gifts are one of our most popular engraving applications. Whether you need 5 engraved tumblers for a client appreciation gift or 200 for a corporate event, we can handle both.
What file format do you need?
Vector files (.ai, .eps, .pdf, .svg) produce the best results for laser engraving. If you only have a raster image or logo, our team can help convert or recreate it — design work is billed at $55/hr with the first 20 minutes included.
Can laser engraving go on fabric or clothing?
Laser engraving is designed for hard goods — drinkware, glass, leather, wood, and metal. For apparel decoration, we recommend embroidery, DTF, screen printing, or vinyl depending on your design and garment.
Does the engraving feel different to the touch?
Yes. Laser engraving creates a recessed impression in the surface — you can feel the design with your fingertip. On coated drinkware, the engraved area is slightly rough compared to the smooth coating. On leather, the impression is clean and defined.
Is laser engraving dishwasher safe on drinkware?
On quality coated drinkware, laser engraving is generally dishwasher safe. The engraved mark is permanent — but hand washing is always recommended to preserve the appearance of the item over time.
