If you want decoration that looks expensive, feels premium, and lasts for the life of the garment — embroidery is the answer. Thread stitched directly into fabric creates a dimensional, textured design that printed methods simply cannot replicate. It's the standard for business apparel, uniforms, and headwear for a reason: it communicates professionalism and quality in a way that's immediately recognizable.
A polo shirt with an embroidered logo doesn't just look like a uniform — it looks like a company that cares about quality. That impression starts before anyone reads a word on the garment.
At Personal Graphics, embroidery is handled entirely in-house using Madeira and Robison-Anton thread in an extensive range of colors, with support for up to 15 colors per design.
What Is Embroidery?
Embroidery uses a computerized machine to stitch thread directly into the fabric of a garment. The design is first converted into a digital stitch file through a process called digitization — then the machine follows that file precisely, building the design layer by layer in thread.
The result is a decoration that is permanently woven into the fabric itself. It doesn't sit on top of the garment like a print — it's part of the garment. Embroidered designs don't crack, peel, or fade under normal use and washing conditions.
Why Embroidery Might Be the Right Choice for Your Project
Embroidery is the best fit when one or more of the following apply:
- You want decoration that looks and feels premium — not just printed
- You're ordering business uniforms, corporate polos, dress shirts, or professional jackets
- You're decorating hats, caps, or beanies
- You want decoration that will last for the life of the garment without degrading
- Your design is a logo, monogram, or bold text with defined color areas
- You want your brand to communicate quality and professionalism at a glance
Embroidery is not ideal for designs with photographic detail, complex gradients, or very small text. For those, DTF or sublimation printing is the better choice. Our team can help you decide what's right for your artwork.
How the Process Works
- Your artwork is digitized — converted into a stitch file that tells the machine how to recreate the design in thread
- The garment is hooped — secured in a frame that holds it flat and stable
- The machine stitches the design using the selected thread colors, layer by layer
- The finished garment is trimmed, inspected, and prepared for delivery
Digitization is a critical step that requires skill and attention. Well-digitized files produce clean, sharp stitch results. Poorly digitized files produce loose, uneven stitching. Our team handles digitization in-house for every order.
What Embroidery Looks Like and How It Holds Up
Embroidery adds a slight raised texture to the decorated area — the individual stitches create dimension and depth that changes slightly depending on the viewing angle. Colors are rich and vibrant, and the thread has a natural sheen that adds to the premium appearance.
Embroidered decorations are among the most durable in the industry. Thread stitched into fabric holds up through hundreds of washes without fading, peeling, or cracking. Wash normally — no special care instructions required beyond what you'd do for the garment itself.
Maximum embroidery area:
- Standard garments (chest, back, sleeve): 14 inches wide by 11 inches tall
- Hats: 2 inches wide by 4 inches tall
Up to 15 thread colors supported per design.

Artwork Requirements
- Best formats: Vector file (.ai, .eps, .pdf) or clean, high-resolution PNG
- Designs should use bold shapes, solid color areas, and clearly defined outlines
- Very fine lines, small text (under approximately 1/4 inch tall), and intricate detail may need simplification for clean stitch reproduction
- Our team handles digitization and will flag any concerns before production begins

Frequently Asked Questions
What is digitization and why do I need it?
Digitization is the process of converting your artwork into a stitch file that tells the embroidery machine how to recreate your design in thread. Every embroidery design needs a stitch file before production can begin. It's a one-time cost — once your design is digitized, the file is kept on file for all future orders.
Do I pay the digitization fee every time I order?
No. The digitization fee is one-time. Once your design is on file, future orders only require the embroidery production cost.
What's the minimum order for embroidery?
There is no minimum order quantity. You can order a single piece or hundreds — whatever your project requires.
Can you match my brand colors exactly?
We carry an extensive range of Madeira and Robison-Anton thread colors. Share your color codes and our team will identify the closest match. An exact Pantone match may not always be available in thread, but we'll get as close as possible and confirm before production.
Can embroidery go on hats?
Yes — hat embroidery is one of our most popular services. The maximum design area for hats is 2 inches by 4 inches. Structured and unstructured headwear both work well with embroidery.
How do I care for embroidered garments?
Embroidered garments can be washed normally. Machine wash in cold water, tumble dry low. No special care instructions are required — embroidery is one of the most durable decoration methods available.
My logo is complex with gradients. Will embroidery work?
Embroidery works in solid thread colors and defined stitch paths — gradients and photographic detail cannot be reproduced in thread. If your logo has these elements, our team will suggest how to adapt it for embroidery, or recommend DTF printing as an alternative.
Can I add individual names to each garment?
Yes. Name embroidery is available at $6.00 per name (1/2 inch standard size, Block or Brush Script). Names are added to each garment individually.
